British Virgin Islands Musts

Sandy Cay, the tiny uninhabited island nestled in the Sea of Abaco, is an ideal one-day retreat while visiting the British Virgin Islands. Being a part of the National Parks Trust, the island is a nature lover’s paradise sheltering beautiful birds and endangered turtles. With its pristine white beaches, aquamarine water and shallow coral reefs, the island will hold you in its thrall.

One of the most majestic site on the island of Virgin Gorda, and a definite must do is exploring the magnificent boulders and crystal waters of The Baths. This amazing natural formation was created by volcanic eruptions, which brought gigantic boulders, known as batholiths, to the surface creating a series of interconnected pools and beaches. Visitors can explore these pools and beaches while gazing up at the massive boulders.

Far away from all the trappings of the modern world, Cooper Island beckons you with pristine beach, warm Caribbean surf and mysterious shipwrecks. This little gem of the British Virgin Islands not only boasts unspoiled beauty and the possibility of adventure, but is also remarkable for the history of its resilient inhabitants and their constant attempt to protect the environment of the island.

Devil’s Bay National Park, on the southwestern tip of Virgin Gorda, has some fabulous beaches, great for swimming and snorkeling, and is home to an incredible cactus garden with Organ Pipe Cactuses growing as high as 22 feet.

No visit to the British Virgin Islands would be complete without exploring the Caves at Treasure Point, on Norman Island. These caves are considered to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s epic novel, Treasure Island. Go by boat and explore the historic caves, filled with pirate lore. Also a great spot for snorkeling!

The 40-75 ft dive to The Wreck of the Chikuzen is without a doubt one of the most incredible dives in all of the Caribbean. On this amazing though challenging adventure, divers will explore the 246ft Japanese refrigeration vessel which is home to a multitude of incredible sea life, including barracudas, horse-eye jacks, stingrays, eagle rays, nurse sharks, black tip reef sharks, and a 600lb jewfish!

Wreck Of Chikuzen

An incredibly shallow water dive site known as The Indians can be found off the coast of Norman Island, or just a short boat ride from Tortola. The dive site is noticeable from above the surface for its four stone pillars that rise about 50ft from the surface. Beneath the surface, you can explore the coral gardens and abundant sea life surrounding the pillars. There is even a 15ft tunnel carved into the pillars and an underwater cavern!

Buck Island is world famous for its Elkhorn coral barrier reef and underwater trail. The entire area was declared a National Monument by the U.S. government for attracting and sheltering a variety of underwater species. It is an ideal destination for those who love exploring marine life and coral reefs.

The secluded Mahoe Bay in Virgin Gorda is a gentle curve of off-white sand dotted with quaint villas and laced with emerald-green tropical vegetation. The shallow bay reflects the azure sky and is favored by snorkelers.

Another amazing dive in the British Virgin Islands is the Wreck of Rhone, the first and only Marine National Park. The RMS Rhone was a 310ft long, 40ft wide Royal Mail Steamer, which sunk in 1867 and the sea world surrounding it is an underwater paradise with fringing reefs and sea grass beds. Truly a dream dive for all experienced divers!
