The population of St. Barths remains very conservative and proud of its lineage. The locals seem reserved, yet are much friendlier than they appear. Culture and tradition is very important in St. Barths, Every joyous occasion is celebrated with a 'ti-sec' shot of rum, a baked galette - the traditional St Barths bread, or a sweet potato pudding. Accordions, tambourines, and maracas are played and dancing is always included in celebrations.

The traditional island costume is worn only for the island’s Saint’s Day or other folkloric events. Until a few years ago, it was still possible to glimpse an occasional woman wearing traditional white pleated bonnets in rural areas. From the 'caleche' and the straw hat worn in Corossol and Colombier to the Panama of Cul de Sac, Marigot, or Vitet, each has a different style. The 'caleche' or “Quichenotte,” a large white bonnet, is made with strips of pleated white fabric sewn together or with narrow pieces of wood inserted into the spaces made when the fabric is sewn to shape the bonnet.

Creating objects from straw has always been a part of the culture of St Barthélemy. Today, the weaving of straw is done with a great deal of love and patience by some of the older women on the island. Thanks to them, the creation of these little works of art has not been lost over time, and younger generations can discover this traditional aspect of the island’s heritage.
